There is not cost for the picnic. We do ask that you bring a covered side dish or desert! You need to sign up so we know how much food to have on hand. Hope you can join us for this fun event.

We will have a fly tying contest for those interested. Guided by the rules stated below, you can bring a previously tied fly to the picnic which we will (much like a secret agent) give you a number and take away our name. Flies will be awarded by Saltwater, Freshwater and Peoples Choice. Prizes are simply the joy of participating!

VCFA Fly Tying Contest Rules

The following rules apply to the Virginia Coastal Fly Anglers Fly Tying Contest.  All fly tying contestants shall adhere to the contest rules or risk elimination from the contest.

  1. Flies entered in the contest shall not be purchased commercially, tied by a professional fly tyer/company/fly shop, or tied by any person other than the contest entrant.

  2. Flies entered in the contest may use any available material in its construction (ex: natural, synthetic, etc.)

  3. Flies entered in the contest must be fishable (able to be tied to a fly rod leader and designed to catch fish).

  4. Fly categories are divided between “Salt Water” and “Fresh Water.”  Where applicable, each Salt Water and Fresh Water category shall include: Streamers, Nymphs, Dry Flies, Poppers, and a “People’s Choice” award.  

  5. The “People’s Choice” award is selected by VCFA members, attending guests, and visitors to the fly tying contest, indicating a fly favored, appreciated, or especially well-liked by the persons in attendance of the VCFA Fly Tying Contest.

  6. Contestants shall provide a “recipe card” detailing the materials used in each fly entered in the contest.  The contestant’s name shall be printed on the back of each card.

  7. If asked by club leadership, contestants must be willing to demonstrate tying the fly(s) at a future VCFA meeting in an effort to educate other members in the flies design and construction.

  8. All fly entries will be judged by VCFA leadership and prizes awarded accordingly.   The decision of the judges is final.
