Fly Tackle

New anglers are often intimidated by the wide array of fly fishing equipment available on the market; some of that equipment is very expensive. Fly fishing need not be expensive or overly complicated. VCFA members learn what equipment is needed to be successful, as well as where, and how to fish without breaking the bank.

Fly Tying

Many fly fishermen enjoy tying their own flies. Fly tying is a fun way to expand your involvement in the sport. There is nothing like the satisfaction of catching a trophy size fish on your own creation! Fly Tying instruction, materials, and tools are offered free at each meeting.

Fly Rod Casting Instructions

Weather permitting, and during extended daylight hours, VCFA will hold casting demonstrations and instruction outside on the grass area. Bring your own gear or use one of the VCFA club rods.

Catch and Release

Fly-fishing offers one of the best means of practicing catch & release fishing. Flies are typically easy to remove and do far less damage than many of the hooks used by conventional anglers. This also applies to removing hooks from the inadvertently hooked angler!

  1. Flies entered in the contest shall not be purchased commercially, tied by a professional fly tyer/company/fly shop, or tied by any person other than the contest entrant.

  2. Flies entered in the contest may use any available material in its construction (ex: natural, synthetic, etc.)

  3. Flies entered in the contest must be fishable (able to be tied to a fly rod leader and designed to catch fish).

  4. Fly categories are divided between “Salt Water” and “Fresh Water.”  Where applicable, each Salt Water and Fresh Water category shall include: Streamers, Nymphs, Dry Flies, Poppers, and a “People’s Choice” award.

  5. The “People’s Choice” award is selected by VCFA members, attending guests, and visitors to the fly tying contest, indicating a fly favored, appreciated, or especially well-liked by the persons in attendance of the VCFA Fly Tying Contest.

  6. Contestants shall provide a “recipe card” detailing the materials used in each fly entered in the contest.  The contestant’s name shall be printed on the back of each card.

  7. If asked by club leadership, contestants must be willing to demonstrate tying the fly(s) at a future VCFA meeting in an effort to educate other members in the flies design and construction.

  8. All fly entries will be judged by VCFA leadership and prizes awarded accordingly.   The decision of the judges is final.
